WHAT’S A TRAVEL POSTER?
Usually, travel posters are used to feature a destination either in a travel agency or shopping mall to make you have the urge to go there. It is an advertisement, but some of them also become classic art posters that wind up selling at auctions for quite a bit of money.
WHY DO TRAVEL AGENCIES USE THEM?
There’s nothing like a beautifully designed poster to brighten up walls and attract attention from pedestrians. Walk into a busy agency and you’ll most likely start seeing posters of destinations like the Caribbean if you’re in Chicago in the winter.
ARE TRAVEL POSTERS PHOTOS OR ILLUSTRATIONS?
Nowadays you can find them using more photographic art, but back in the 30’s and 40’s, art deco style and heavy use of ultra modern style typography was used to glamorize destinations like Switzerland, France, ski resorts, landmarks like the Eiffel tower and the Grand Canyon. Many artists made beautiful serigraphs of the grand canyon in vivid colors, and still do to this day.
